MICR, or magnetic ink character recognition, is a technology that is used to verify the authenticity of check documents. The special ink is called MICR toner and it is sensitive to magnetic fields and is used to print the characters in the ‘bank line’ of the checks. In order to print your own checks you need a set of MICR fonts that meet both ANSI and ABA banking standards, and a system that allows you to calibrate your printing to adjust for any spacing discrepancies. You will also need a laser printer to print the magnetic ink.Hewlett Packard is the biggest players in the industry, and that is why MICR toner is available for most HP MICR laser printers. Other printer manufacturers may not offer models that can accept MICR toner so it is important that you look at the product carefully before purchasing. If you are planning to print your own checks from home you will also need a supply of blank check stock. It is recommended that you use the 24 pound secure check stock made specifically for laser jet printers and magnetic toner. The check stock is perforated to allow for easy check and stub tear off and comes in the standard 8 ½ x 11” size.
